Doug semple KE7GYYWhat a fascinating collection of antique radios Doug has! His favorite is the 1923 Kennedy 5 with three exposed tubes. His 1923 Michigan has one tube and a tickler designed to send a sample of the signal back through that tube for amplification. Doug has his grandfather’s 1933 GE cathedral-style table radio and the very early Zenith 36 shortwave. My favorite of his antiques is the Zenith chairside radio from the 1940s that he bought at a recent Power mansion estate sale. When Doug was about 12 his dad helped him repair another 1940s radio, and he has been fixing and restoring radios ever since. His lifelong interest in radio gives him an enviable store of knowledge and an extensive library of Rider’s troubleshooting manuals. He earned the Amateur Extra license about two years ago, and loves to listen to and learn from DXers on his Kenwood TS-480. Karen KE7ILN had a twinkle in her eye when she related how she and Doug met in an advanced weather radar course in the Air Force. She had been wanting an antique radio (just one!), so when she heard Doug mention his, she asked if she could buy one. She wound up with her husband of 37 years and a collection of over 120 antique radios! September 2017 |
