Jay swant KG7SYXFrom the time he was a boy, Jay had always wanted a Jeep. When he was in the fifth grade, his father bought him one to drive around their property. He had to learn to keep it running, too. But there was a catch: Jay had to keep his grades up. If his grades dropped too low, the Jeep stayed parked. Needless to say, this was a powerful incentive. Jay has been working on his own vehicles ever since. Once on his own, his interest turned from Jeeps to Broncos to Land Rovers. Currently he owns 8 Land Rovers of various ages from 1966-1995.
As mentioned in the February 2020 article on Daysee KI7CNG, the Swants are dedicated overlanders who love to travel in Rover caravans over backroads and BLM lands. Their club, the Rocky Mountain Rover Club, was featured in last summer’s issue of Rover’s Magazine. Click on the link: https://www.roversmagazine.com/2019/08/summer-2019/ Go to “Yes, We Have Grey Poupon,” p. 18. Jay is on the left on page 20. He and his Rover also appear in photos on p. 23 and p. 26. On October 2, 2020, Jay will turn 50. To celebrate his first half-century, Jay is planning a 50-day stay at the Kemmerer cabin. He will be there from the day after Christmas to Valentine’s Day. There is no running water or electricity. Over the summer the Swants will put up all the firewood. Jay has been collecting and organizing his equipment, and he will figure out the menu as it gets closer. People can get there by snowmobile when they want to visit, and visitors will bring fresh groceries. The plan is to be able to stay up there for 50 days even if nobody can get in or out. Of course, he will need radios and is thinking about taking a base station to the cabin. Could it be powered by solar power? Jay is researching that. His mobile radio is a Yaesu FT 8900 with a Quad Larson antenna. He also has a Yaesu FT-60 handheld. CCARC can count on Jay and Daysee Swant to help with the Elkhorn Endurance Run every year. This year their son Gus will serve as safety office at Field Day 2020. March 2020 |
